Description:

Despite singing and playing bass for the Savannah punk/grunge band Free-for-All, James Mercer isn’t the prettiest on the block, and has the scars to prove it. The kind that translate to busted bottles and burning debris with the odd cuff mark to boot. Each scar hidden behind a full sleeve of tattoos down each arm. On his left, a veritable mash up of cultural icons and occult sigils. On his right, a collection of ferns and broken branches of indeterminate meaning. Broad and just under six-feet tall, he can be a surprisingly imposing figure when paired with his abrasive nature. His style blends the usual mash of dark shirts and band tees, but occasionally includes different types of cultural or regional clothing reflecting his travels across the US.

Personality:

James at the height of emotion is a brash, unapologetic asshole. Fighting for what he believes is right and willing to bring a whole riot along with him to help others. Using rousing lyrics and visceral imagery to drive the crowd into action against the oppressor of the moment. That said, he’s also a veritable junkie—riding the highs of crowd adulation and whatever narcotic he source from start to encore. After one too many wild shows—including one where the moshpit Free-for-All was centered around a burning molotov he threw—bandmates and fans alike took to calling him Voli(tile) when he was at his worst.

In the lulls between gigs, James actively keeps up with politics and contemporary academic topics. Both of which serve as the basis for the band’s songs, and as targets for their crowd’s ire. A caffeine addict, he can regularly be found hopping between independent coffee shops for the opportunity to post flyers for their shows or spread the latest counterculture news. A bit of an urban explorer, he’s always on the lookout for the next impromptu venue as they’re always one firebomb away from being blacklisted from the last.
