Five Officers Killed in Apparent Ambush on I-16: Survivor Blames Notorious Gang
Savannah, GA — March 27, 2025
Law enforcement agencies in both Savannah and Atlanta are reeling after a tragic and violent incident claimed the lives of five officers very early this morning. The officers, part of a joint transport detail, were enroute to Atlanta with police equipment when they were ambushed before Interstate 16.
Officials confirm that only one officer survived the attack. The survivor, whose identity is being withheld for their safety, reported that the assault was carried out by members of the River Kings — a criminal organization with a long history of thefts and suspected ties to several unsolved homicides in the area.
According to the survivor’s account, the assailants used a coordinated strike to force the transport to a stop before attacking the officers, eventually driving away with the equipment once most officers were killed. The names of the fallen officers have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
“This was a deliberate, brutal act of violence against those who swore to protect and serve,” said Savannah Police Chief at a press conference this afternoon. “We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.”
The survivor was reportedly able to identify one of the attackers. Police have released a composite sketch of the individual regarding build and have a vocal description to go off of, and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and federal authorities are assisting in the case. Law enforcement presence has been increased along key corridors, and officials are warning the public to avoid approaching anyone suspected to be involved.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the confidential tip line at 1-800-555-TIPS or contact their local authorities.
