HOUSEBOAT DESTROYED IN MYSTERIOUS EARLY MORNING FIRE ON SAVANNAH RIVER

Savannah, GA – Friday 06 June, 2:30 a.m.

A houseboat moored on the Savannah River was completely destroyed in a sudden and unexplained fire in the early hours of Friday morning. The vessel, which authorities believe to have served either as a permanent residence or vacation retreat, caught fire sometime after midnight and burned for nearly an hour before sinking beneath the waterline.

Savannah Fire & Emergency Services responded swiftly after reports of smoke and flames were called in by a nearby dockworker. Despite the speed of the response, the blaze had already engulfed most of the structure by the time crews arrived. Fireboats were deployed to control the flames, but the boat eventually succumbed to the damage and sank near the eastern edge of the city’s historic waterfront.

At this time, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. A spokesperson for the fire department confirmed that no one was believed to be on board at the time of the incident. “We’ve found no evidence of occupants or casualties,” said Battalion Chief Marianne Lewis. “It’s fortunate no lives were lost, but the cause of the fire remains unknown.”

Investigators have yet to determine the origin of the blaze. There were no known gas leaks or fuel spills reported, and officials have ruled out electrical malfunction for now. The remnants of the vessel, now partially submerged, will be further examined once conditions allow.

Local authorities are asking anyone with information or who may have seen unusual activity near the riverfront during the early hours to contact Savannah Fire Investigations. The incident remains under review.
